Activists with the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida sent a message to rush hour motorists by hanging a large banner reading “Gator Hunting = Heartless Killing” at the Interstate 4 overpass at Conroy Road on Thursday, Sept. 9. Lake Jesup, Lake Harney and Lake Monroe are among the Orlando-area destinations for alligator hunters. Florida’s 2010 alligator hunt began on Sunday, Aug. 15 and continues until Monday, Nov. 1. “The suffering of alligators during Florida’s public hunt is undeniable. Alligators are snagged with barbed hooks, pierced with arrows, and stabbed with harpoons,” said ARFF Coordinator Bryan Wilson. “Death is rarely quick and alligators may be left to suffer long after being pulled from the water.”
UCF has the third-best graduate engineering program in the country, according to recently released rankings. Hispanic Business Magazine released its 2010 Best Schools for Hispanics list, which ranks the top 10 graduate programs in the country in medicine, law, business and engineering. This is the sixth consecutive year UCF’s engineering program has been ranked. It has steadily moved up the list from eighth place, where it debuted in 2005.
The Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department, Winter Park Professional Firefighters Local 1598 and Central Florida Professional Firefighters will welcome the Pink Heals Tour to the city of Winter Park at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at Central Park West Meadow and welcome visitors for the duration of the event until 2 p.m. The Pink Heals Tour promotes cancer awareness as firefighters designated as “Guardians of the Ribbon” dress in pink fire suits and drive pink fire engines across the United States to gain support for women in their fight against cancer. Each engine in the tour contains the signatures of cancer survivors and any breast cancer survivor that attends the event can sign their name to the engine.
The city of Winter Park’s Fire-Rescue Department will be offering seasonal flu shots at their upcoming “Flu Shot Fridays.” These clinics will enable residents to obtain quick and affordable influenza vaccines administered by licensed, insured professionals. “Flu Shot Fridays” will take place from 9 a.m. to noon through November at Station 62, 300 S. Lakemont Ave. Flu shots will also be given on Saturdays at the Winter Park Farmers’ Market, 200 W. New England Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon during September.
