Derek Donahue, 13, recently earned scouting's highest level of ranking — Eagle Scout. As a dedicated member of Boy Scout Troop 205 of First Presbyterian Church of Maitland, it took him only two and a half years to earn this achievement. Derek has been a resident of Maitland for 11 years and is the son of Dorine Olive.

The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts (The Hurston) celebrates its 20th season this year with a special exhibit, "Zora Neale Hurston: The Legacy of Inspired Reality" (through Aug. 27). This exhibit pays tribute to Eatonville's hometown daughter with a distinctive display featuring the works of numerous artists inspired by Hurston, with images of Hurston and her works woven into the exhibit. Tax-Aide volunteers, trained and certified by the IRS, will provide free income tax assistance at 16 sites throughout the Orange and Seminole County area through Thursday, April 15. Individuals seeking assistance should bring pertinent tax documents such as a copy of last year's income tax return; forms showing income earned, pensions and Social Security; 1099 Forms showing interest and dividends; and photo ID of self plus social security cards for all those listed on their return. Patrick Gaughn, class of 2010 at Connecticut College and a Winter Park resident, has been named to the Dean's Honors for the 2009 fall semester.

The Morse Museum will open a new wing to house most of its holdings of objects and architectural elements from Louis Comfort Tiffany's Long Island country estate, Laurelton Hall, in early 2011. It will increase the public exhibition space by about 50 percent.

The Valencia Character Company announced Stephen A. DeWoody of Winter Park as the winner of its 19th annual Original Play Competition among Florida playwrights. DeWoody's winning script, "DOORS," will debut as a fully-staged production, March 30 through April 3 at the Black Box Theater on Valencia Community College's East Campus.
